Live Review of Telefonics from their CD release party of Colour Deluxe--7/26/02

July 26th - 10:00 Friday night. It's time for the Telefonics CD release party. Time for pigtails and maryjanes cause I'm out to see the telefonics, a new poppy-punky band of neo-underground velveteens. Story has it, lead vocalist/theremin player/noise sculptress, Gina Rullo and songwriter / guitarist / keysman / singer / sample meister John Johnston, got together and decided to create their own version of aural bliss. So they enlisted lead guitarist Pete Burke, bass player /songwriter / artiste Kevin Manco, and drummer/madman Eric Mildner. The results ... well, how shall I explain this?

My partner and I arrived at the appointed hour to a full house down at the Beermug on 11th and Liberty - one of Erie's finest and oldest establishments for quality get-down vibe. Arco Flute Foundation, a troupe of noise renegades from the Edinboro area, was greasing the wheel for the telefonics. The room was thick with all the makings of a free wheeling evening of deliciousness. Round about the witching hour, people turned their attention away from the tasty goodies provided by Joe Gallagher's Vegan catering and all ears, eyes, and toes turned toward the telefonics - who arrived complete with ties, coats and heels - ready for their big night! They blasted through some of their deadly stand-bys like "Silver Plastic Space Bag","Getting Over You" and "Dead Air" - you know the ones... the ones with the deadly fish hooks in them; the one's that get stuck in your fat fish head because you were flailing your flippers, swimming in the tide of sound at the time.

They also kick-cooed out some classic covers like Blondie's "Dreamin" and the Go Go's "We Got the Beat" - telefonics style. Toward the end of the evening, they invited some of the artists that guested on their new CD - entitled Colour Delux - on stage. This included Pittsburgh based Virago's headman, Gary Anderson; bass player Mike Jares; singer/dancer Alethea Bodine; jazzman bass player, Steve Trohoske; and last but not least the ever-lovin Paul Fiorelli (Beermug's one and only) pumped out "Paint It Black" with guest backing vocalists Danielle Cotterill and Gina Manerelli. After that... well, I can't remember much after that moment - it is indelibly etched into in my memory, still...

I have yet to have heard a better band to bop to in Erie. High bop factor - very high. For those who like a taste of the unexpected; the sublime; the catchy and the caught; Colour Delux is currently on sale now - I highly recommend it . It was an exhilarating night of head bopping, toe tapping, limb thrashing, happy tastebud fun. Thanx telefonics!!!
